Powers/Abilities
Superhuman Powers: Jessica's "venom blasts" are actually a bioelectric energy she can use to stun or kill normal humans. They can be directed or sent out in a wide dispersal. This energy also gives Jessica super-human strength, speed and endurance. She's no Ms. Marvel, but she can lift up to 7 tons. Her endurance helps her heal from injuries (and even avoid them in the first place), while her speed mostly helps her reaction time to things. (In other words, she won't be running any races against Northstar anytime soon.) Additionally, Jessica possesses latent pheromone powers that would attract men and repel women if active. They could be triggered any time, likely by a deep dislike for a woman or a strong attraction to a man. Other Abilities: Jessica is a fully trained Hydra and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, able to use a variety of weapons and possessing excellent hand-to-hand combat skills thanks mostly to Taskmaster (the jerk). She's also a fully trained and capable spy. She has innate charisma and an ability to pull on different masks as the situation dictates. She can't speak any other languages but can swear in a half dozen (or more), including French and Russian. Not usually much of a cook, Jessica can make a mean chef's salad. She's a rabid Sudoku player, playing daily in the newspaper and even timing herself. She loves poker, especially Texas Hold 'Em, and will take your money if you challenge her. Weaknesses: Her "venom blasts" take a lot out of her and the more she uses them, the longer she needs to recharge later. She can sleep upwards of eighteen hours following a particularly grueling battle. Also, there are ways to combat the charges-- force fields, extensive rubber padding of some kind, etc. Her latent powers are no good to her as she is unaware of them. And, if they did come into play, they would probably be a wild card (which is not necessarily a good thing). She's susceptible to mental and psychic attacks, especially because of Mentallo's tampering with her mind when she was younger. She's tried to build mental blocks but it's mostly a lost cause because of the telepath's interference. Jessica has a severe allergy to poison ivy-- she landed in the hospital for a week the one time she came into contact with it. She tends to be distant and has trouble making emotional connections with people and her personal life is pretty much nonexistent. So, like, if she were to go missing, no one would notice until she didn't show up for work. She also can't write an essay to save her life, often dictating her S.H.I.E.L.D. reports to her computer to bypass her piss-poor grammar skills.
History
Jessica Miriam Drew was born in 1984 to scientists Miriam and Jonathon Drew in London, England. Due to the nature of John's genetic research, the family traveled constantly through Europe during her formative years. The family rarely spent more than a month at a time at their family home in the English countryside. It wasn't the most normal of childhoods but Jessica was the apple of her parent's eyes. They had made their stay in Transia shortly after Jessica's fifth birthday, hiring a local by the name of Bova to play nanny. It was there that she began to experience a strange illness. Unbeknownst to Miriam, John had used her pregnancy as a means to an end for his research and, as such, Jessica was now suffering the consequences. John continued to test Jessica, despite the episodes she experienced, but Miriam discovered his journal and became livid. She urged Jessica to hide and the parents fought. When John lashed out at Miriam physically, Jessica became distraught and her body released what she would later call her venom blasts. The blast struck both of her parents and she passed out. When Jessica awoke, she was in an unfamiliar place, surrounded by men in green uniforms. A man she knew as a passing acquaintance of her father's-- General Wyndham-- was there to greet her. He explained to her that she had been in a coma for a little over eleven years. She was now a seventeen-year-old girl... with the mental capacity of a five-year-old. From the moment she awoke, everything Wyndham did was designed to make Jessica a dedicated HYDRA agent. He told her that her parents had perished in their home in Transia to separate her from her former life. In an effort to understand what had happened prior to her coma, Wyndham had Mentallo enter her mind and help her remember. For a second time her powers activated, injuring Mentallo, but this time Jessica only passed out for a few hours. Jessica became a member of the Hydra program, joining other people her same age for the first time. She became especially close with a boy named Jared and they eventually began dating. Meanwhile, Taskmaster took to training (and humiliating) her. She also worked on controlling her venom blasts into a formidable weapon. It wasn't long before she fully acclimated, learning about Hydra's supposed mission and picking up no less than seven types of martial arts. When Jared was sent on a mission to Latveria and subsequently captured by S.H.I.E.L.D., Jessica led the charge to rescue him. It was there that she had her first run-in with Nick Fury. (It was also then that she wore her costume for the first time and adopted the codename Arachne.) She managed to take down a room of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents but it wasn't enough. Jessica was good but she wasn't that good. Instead of arresting her, though, Fury introduced her to the real world and showed her just what Hydra was really about. Shocked and disillusioned, Jessica escaped the S.H.I.E.L.D. facility. An agent attempted to tail her but she managed to lose him in about two hours time. Jessica holed up in a small village not far from where her home in Transia had been. She dyed her hair and kept under the radar. After training long enough, it wasn't too difficult for her to manage. She began studying and learning at an accelerated rate in an attempt to bridge the gap between her body and her mind. Her theory was that, if she lost her innocent naïveté, no one would ever be able to take advantage of her like Hydra had again. Jessica made it a point to change locations periodically and not to use the same alias for too long. About two years after her escape, she made it to England. She missed having a family and decided it was time to search for hers. It was then that Hydra (and S.H.I.E.L.D.) found her. Hydra got to her first, finding her at a club (she was only nineteen, after all, and entitled to a little fun). Jared confronted her, taunting her over their relationship as he exacted revenge for her leaving him in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s custody. Jessica was forced to lash out more strongly than ever before, managing to stun an entire squad of Hydra agents. Furious at having her life interrupted and realizing just how deeply she'd been manipulated, Jessica commandeered Hydra's helicopter. She took Jared with her and set it on the cell that had used her. She escaped (mostly) unscathed and once again dropped off the grid. This time Jessica hopped the pond and made the United States her home. She spent a good deal of time traveling there, as well, eventually taking the G.E.D. and even applying to college. SFSU accepted her and she moved out west to attend. College meant staying in one place, though, and S.H.I.E.L.D. managed to find her again a good two years after her Hydra confrontation. Fury cornered her one day after class to offer her a job. It was about then that Jessica had a minor breakdown. Fed up with everything, she threw a fit insisting she be left alone. She didn't care about Hydra anymore, she just wanted a normal life. That all changed when Fury dropped a bombshell: her parents were still alive. Actually, had been still alive in her mother's case-- she'd been found murdered in New York City just days earlier. That was all it took to get Jessica on board. Fury explained to her that her mother had been a ghost until she popped up in a hotel in New York. Next day, she was dead. Her father, it seemed, had worked for Hydra all along. Using S.H.I.E.L.D.'s resources, Jessica began to observe and track in order to find her father. When she found him, she slipped off the grid and donned her old costume. This wasn't a S.H.I.E.L.D. operation-- it was her family and she wanted it back. Meeting her father again at twenty-two was not what she'd expected. Jessica wanted to save him... but she learned that day that she couldn't save someone who didn't want saving. Her father, still the scientist, tried to get data from her. And that's when she realized he was only ever going to see her as a project, not a daughter. Unsure what her next move was, Jessica was bombarded by a group of similarly powered women. They were her father's research. He'd attempted to recreate what he'd done to his own child multiple times. He was using her to create a super-powered army for Hydra. Disgusted, Jessica fought them until her contingency plan could come into effect. The Hydra base was blown to smithereens... with Jessica still there. She survived and S.H.I.E.L.D. rescued her. It took her days to recuperate but she'd made up her mind. She didn't want to be in the spy business-- she wanted a normal life. She wanted to find herself now that she was really and truly alone. Fury respected her decision but insisted she could return if ever she wanted to. Jessica returned to school, studying a variety of things. She managed a full year of school before boredom really began to set in. The so-called normal life wasn't what she'd been born or trained for. Now that no one was chasing her, it was just too dull. It gave her too much time to think about things she'd rather not think about. After a lengthy pro-con list, Jessica called Fury and told him she did want to join S.H.I.E.L.D. as an agent. She didn't want her powers to be the thing that made her an asset, though-- they'd ruined too many lives by her count. Instead, she went through extensive espionage training. (She was determined not to have the wool pulled over her eyes again.) After successful completion, she began working operations. Though she's now been with S.H.I.E.L.D. for over three years, she's probably closest to Fury (who is something of an enigma in and of himself). She doesn't trust easily and, given the nature of her assignments, most of the people she meets wouldn't be worth it, anyway. She respects her fellow agents but generally kept to herself-- until the power swap happened. Her secret identity was blown and she was shunted to the Avengers full-time as both liaison and a team member. This did not please her because, although she respects the capes, she never wanted to be one. (Plus her uniform is way too tight.)
